The easiest way to apply for Medicare is online. The apply online you must have a My Social Security Account online. If you don’t have one, you can create one: https://secure.ssa.gov/RIL/SiView.action Once you have completed (or if you already have one) you can apply online: https://secure.ssa.gov/iClaim/rib You need to have your User Id and password for your My Social Security account when you apply.
If you don’t have a My Social Security Account your only other option is to call your local Social Security office and apply over the phone. Use the following link to obtain your local office’s phone number: https://secure.ssa.gov/ICON/main.jsp
If by any chance you are still employed and have employer-provided creditable health insurance from a company with more than 20 employees, or are covered by a spouse’s employer health insurance, you may not need to apply for Medicare at this time. Please confirm with your Human Resource department whether or not you have creditable health insurance and therefore do not need to apply for Medicare at this time.
You may also need to purchase a Medicare Part D supplement, which is prescription coverage. If you are a veteran you are not required to purchase Part D, you may continue to get your prescriptions through the VA. You need to speak with an insurance agent about obtaining prescription coverage and also for a Medicare Supplement or Advantage plan to help cover the 20% that Medicare doesn’t. As soon as you get your confirmation that you were approved for Part A and Part B, you will be able to purchase the additional coverage.
