Dear Rusty: I am now 80 and my wife is 76, and we both took early Social Security benefits at age 62. When my wife took her Social Security, it was a lot smaller than mine, so they took a portion of mine and added it to hers. How does that work? Also, when I die, will my wife get all of mine or just a percentage? Signed: Curious Senior

Hi Rusty! I am 80 years old and my wife just passed away at age 76. Am I entitled to a surviving spousal benefits? FYI., we both claimed retirement benefits (started receiving early SS benefits at age 62). I will really appreciate your guidance and advice.
Esmaro
First let me offer my condolences on the loss of your wife. You are entitled to a $255 lump sum death benefit which you need to contact your local Social Security office to claim. If your wife’s Social Security benefit was higher than your own Social Security benefit, you may claim her higher benefit and your smaller benefit will stop. If yours is the higher Social Security benefit, you will not receive any benefits on her record. The last payment you are able to keep is the one she received in her month of death.
You may contact us by emailing ssadvisor@amacfoundation.org or calling (888)750-2622.
