FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) – For many military families, suicide is a difficult topic to discuss. However it is a necessary conversation to have, especially in Alaskan communities where military veterans are 1.7 times more likely to die by suicide compared to the general population.

“There’s a period of time where this population is fragile,” explained MaryBeth Goodman, Cohen Veterans Network Clinic Director and military mental health expert, “and it’s been termed the deadly gap. This is a period where veteran suicide is actually 2.5 times higher than the rate of active duty people. If you look at this two years post-separation, it is significantly higher, And actually in the first three months is the most dangerous time.”
