The Homeless Veterans Legal Assistance Program at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School was chosen to receive funds from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide legal services to veterans in order to address homelessness. The Program provides free legal assistance to veterans who are homeless or are at risk of homelessness with issues relating to misdemeanor criminal charges and matters symptomatic of homelessness. Criminal charges are a major obstacle in gaining employment or acquiring housing. For example, a criminal charge as minor as a revoked license can limit a person’s ability to obtain a job or get to work. Outstanding warrants issued for a failure to appear will be an absolute bar in most cases on an individual’s ability to acquire housing. The Homeless Veterans Legal Assistance Program is here to assist in removing these types of barriers and many more.
