Gov. Ron DeSantis recognized the sacrifices of veterans’ spouses during a signing ceremony on Thursday for a bill allowing those spouses to reside in nursing homes managed by the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
The state operates eight nursing homes for veterans, but DeSantis’ approval of HB 725 expands the eligibility for residency to spouses and widows of people who served in the military. However, the spouses would be the last priority for beds.
“It’s just the right thing to do when you have a surviving veteran and the spouse, you know, we want to keep them together. But even when the veteran unfortunately passes on, we recognize that that spouse has also served, and that spouse deserves our support as well,” DeSantis said during a news conference at Baldomero Lopez State Veterans’ Nursing Home in Land O’ Lakes.
