Understanding Aging: The ABCs of Dementia

About This Event

One in nine Americans over 65 has Alzheimer’s Disease. It is the sixth leading cause of death in America, and if no major breakthrough is achieved, by 2050 more than 16 million Americans will have the disease. But people living with Dementia are not statistics. They are living human beings of value who deserve dignity, compassion, and the highest standard of care available.

Join us on Thursday, February 21 for an enlightening and informative two-hour discussion on the stressful and largely misunderstood aspects of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. We’re excited about welcoming Debbie Selsavage and Ed Youngblood of Coping with Dementia LLC with us to lead a conversation on a series of topics designed to overcome misunderstandings swirling around this topic. For example, their remarks will focus on:

  • Alzheimer’s affects on the brain

  • The differences between Alzheimer’s and dementia?

  • Some of the signs of dementia

  • Things a person with dementia may have trouble with

  • Things that contribute to changes in personality and behavior

  • The ten fundamentals for better communication and care

Throughout the session, Debbie and Ed will share additional insights and suggestions on caregiver/patient interactions, including journaling, support group participation, and a host of related issues. They will present Coping with Dementia LLC’s mission of  promoting person-centered compassionate care based on the techniques and principles of Positive Approach to Care™.
