Right up there on top of our list of most frequently asked questions at the AMAC Foundation’s Social Security Advisory Service is “when should I claim my Social Security benefits?” We understand that this question can be confusing, because there is an 8 year window during which to collect your SS benefits, and when, within that window, you claim has a lot to do with how much you will receive. But just worrying about the size of your monthly benefit isn’t the right way to go about answering this question.
When it is best for you, personally, to claim Social Security should look at several important factors, including your life expectancy, your financial needs, whether you are married, and (if you wish to claim before your full retirement age) whether you plan to work. In this Encore edition of a past article, Rusty explains how to decide when it is best to claim. Click here to read the Encore article, and click on this link to listen to it.
Also, if you’re unsure about how these basics apply to you, or if you have any questions about your individual situation under Social Security, note that the AMAC Foundation provides a free-to-the-public advisory service to help Americans navigate the complexities of this program. All questions are answered quickly, at no charge. Learn more about it here…
