Dear Rusty: My husband is 65 and I am 55. He has recently been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. My question is, will I continue receiving his full social security check every month after his passing? Will the amount decrease? Signed: Tearful Wife

Social Security benefits are not an individual account. When you pass away only certain surviving family members are eligible to receive Social Security benefits based on your record.
If you have a surviving spouse that you were married to for at least nine months or an ex-spouse that you were married to for at least 10 years, they are eligible for 100% of the amount of your benefit at the time of your death if their own Social Security benefit is less than your own. If their own benefit is higher than yours, only your current spouse will be eligible for the one-time lump-sum death benefit of $255, and they will not receive any benefits on your record.
If you have children under the age of 18 (up to age 19 if still in high school) they are eligible for up to 75% percent of your benefit. If you have an adult disabled child that became disabled before the age of 22, they are also eligible for up to 75% of your benefit.
No one can inherit someone’s Social Security benefits, they have to be eligible to receive a benefit on your record.
