Dear Rusty: I just turned 64 and now get stuff about Medicare and Medigap and so on. I really don’t know how to retire when it’s time. What should I do? What am I looking for? Am I eligible for anything as of now? I’m so confused about all this that I don’t even know if I can retire when it’s time. Maybe I should just continue working so I don’t have to try to figure this out. Signed: Confused

I have tried explaining to my friends multiple times exactly what you said and none of them understand it. They all have college degrees (one even has an advanced degree)yet none of them can understand this simple rule about when to sign up . They also can’t distinguish between Original Medicare and Medical Advantage no matter what I say or what they read . They also don’t understand the simple overview on the CMS website . I finally referred them to a SHIP counselor and they barely understood them.
