What is Recreation Therapy/Creative Arts Therapy?

Recreation Therapy/Creative Arts Therapy at Hines VA Hospital provides services to inpatients in the Blind Rehabilitation, Community Living, and Spinal Cord Injury Centers; Mental Health; Rehabilitation; Polytrauma; as well as to outpatients. Recreation/Creative Arts Therapy uses a variety of treatment options based on the patient’s treatment goals and functional status.

Recreation Therapy/Creative Arts Therapy is part of the total rehabilitation process. The focus of RT/CAT treatment is to improve and enrich biopsychosocial functioning through active therapy and/or meaningful activities. During treatment and in transition to community integration Veterans are able to address a variety individualized treatment goals which supports an overarching goal of improving the Veteran’s functional independence and quality of life.
