Spousal Benefits are calculated using an indecipherable calculation. Going by the dollar amount each spouse receives per month, even if one’s number is even less than 50% of the other does not qualify based on SSA “calculations” It was very disappointing to find this out upon applying recently after reading about it in “Ask Rusty”. Perhaps a short notification to your readers about this detail would be helpful? Thank you for all the great info you provide.
Hi Deborah,
FYI, I have published numerous articles about Social Security spousal benefits which explain all of the nuances surrounding that option. Please go to this website for an example of a previously published article on this topic: https://socialsecurityreport.org/ask-rusty-should-my-spouse-be-getting-half-of-my-social-security-amount/.
If you still have questions about your personal experience trying to collect Social Security spousal benefits, please contact us directly at SSadvisor@amacfoundation.org, or call us at 1.888.750.2622 to speak directly with one of our accredited SS advisors.
