A total of 182 candidates with military experience won primaries for House and Senate seats this year, according to an analysis from Military Times. That number is down from 196 in 2022, and follows a trend of fewer veterans winning national elected office that began in the late 1970s.

This year’s field boasts 71 incumbents, 16 women and 55 individuals who started their military careers after January 2000. Fifty-three of the candidates are Democrats, while 124 are Republicans.
