SUMMARY:Sudden Death: Are You Prepared?
DESCRIPTION:Attention: This event is comprised of three two-hour sessions. \nHere are the dates of all three sessions: Tuesdays – May 18\, May 25\, & June 1\, 2021 — 10:00 am to 12:00 pm \nNote Location: Lady Lake Library\, 225 W Guava Street\, Lady Lake\, FL 32159 (Room 207) \nAttendance is limited; you must register to attend. \nIf you passed away tomorrow\, will your loved ones know what to do? Will they know where your financial information and tax records\, insurance records\, and investment documents are stored? Will they be able to locate your most current will\, health care directives\, and documented funeral wishes? Can they locate important household documents\, like deeds\, car titles\, and pension statements? \nThe list goes on and on\, but the important point is that having this type of pertinent information organized and available in a structured place is something you can do in advance for those you leave behind. It’s a big task and it’s not an easy one…we know that. But with a structured approach you can create a living document that will prove invaluable to your loved ones. \nThis seminar has been structured to guide you through the process of creating your “Survivor Notebook\,” the repository that will help your loved ones cope after your passing. Conducted in three separate two-hour sessions\, we’ll walk you through identifying what needs to be considered\, assembling the material as we go in an accessible format\, and we’ll be developing an approach to maintaining the material so that it’s always current. You’ll leave with a physical roadmap that will be of immeasurable value to your family. \nThere is no cost for this workshop series\, but attendance is limited so you must register to attend. Light refreshments will be served at each session. Notebook materials will be provided.  \nAlso\, please be advised that COVID-19 restrictions are expected to remain in place for this event\, COVID-19 restrictions will be in effect\, with face coverings and social distancing required. \nA Note on the Importance of Pre-Registering\nFor certain seminars (including the “Sudden death – Are You Prepared?” series)\, there is a considerable amount of interaction between the speakers and the participants\, so we prefer to limit the number of participants to 30. Also\, participants are provided resources in the form of a formal notebook and various reference materials\, all of which must be assembled in advance. Hence\, we need to carefully track the number of expected (and registered) attendees. While we can occasionally accommodate walk-ins\, that’s not always the case\, and unregistered folks tend to be disappointed at having wasted time and effort. Finally\, since we also provided snacks for attendees\, it’s important that we know the audience size we need to plan for when we purchase our supplies the day before.\n \nTo register: \nContact the AMAC Foundation\, 888-750-2622 or email: info@amacfoundation.org

SUMMARY:When & How to Select Home Care
DESCRIPTION:Trish James\, local representatives for “Seniors Helping Seniors\,” will present a half-hour discussion on a variety of issues related to the concept of “aging at home” with a focus on the thought processes that go into determining the approach to selecting home care providers. Her remarks will be centered on two key questions in the minds of folks opting for the “aging at home” approach: \nDo you want to age safely at home but don’t know when it might be time\, what resources are available or how to select the right kind of care ? \nAre you a Family Caregiver who needs some support ?  There are resources\, you don’t have to go it alone—let us provide you with some tips ! \nThis excerpt from the Seniors Helping Seniors website helps put the issue in clearer perspective: \n“Many seniors have lived in their current home for decades. Their greatest wish is to remain in the place where they have cherished memories\, their personal belongings\, and a sense of security. They take pride in their independence and in maintaining the life they have always lived.” \nJoin Trish for this informative discussion! \nThe presentation will be held in Room 207 on the Library’s second floor. \nThere is no need to register for either the presentations or the Expo. Just join us and learn! \n

SUMMARY:Smart\, Assured Living for Seniors
DESCRIPTION:It’s a new concept\, but one that’s rapidly gaining momentum. We’re talking about what many consider to be a natural evolution of what has become known as the “smart home” or the “connected home.” The technology that has worked its way into our daily lives–ideas like video doorbells\, smart appliances\, electronic virtual assistants\, and the like–had as its main thrust the modernization of our living space for convenience and the broad spectrum of gadget control\, and it’s now poised to explode into the realm of aging assistance and health services. Emerging from this convergence is a new concept many are calling “assured living\,” a concept that one of its main proponents–Richfield\, Minnesota’s Best Buy Co. Inc–describes as the use of technology “to help adult children remotely check in on the health and safety of their aging parents.” \nSo\, what does all this mean? Assured living is a natural extension of the smart home concept\, aimed at helping seniors accomplish what an estimated 90% of them prefer to do: live out their later years in their own home. The concept extends communication technologies to help seniors live independently in their familiar surroundings\, facilitating electronic connections with their remote family members. Likewise\, the concept can enable health care providers to be included in this support network\, with the end result being a cohesive\, easy-to-navigate electronic environment that reinforces quality of life. \nOur upcoming seminar will focus on how smart home devices and their supporting technologies interact cooperatively to support an aging population. Whether it’s environmental control\, specific device control\, or external communication aids\, the objective is to provide an atmosphere of convenience\, safety\, and security for a segment of the population projected to encompass 70 million Americans by the year 2030.  Here are the details that will be covered: \n\n\nWhole Home Wi-Fi Systems\n\n\nSmart Devices\n\n\nvoice assistants\n\n\nsmart locks\n\n\nsmart lights\n\n\nsmart outlets and smart switches\n\n\nsmart thermostats\n\n\nrobot vacuums\n\n\n\n\nAssistive Technology\n\n\nGPS-based communications assistance\n\n\nRemote medical and health monitoring devices\n\n\nAutomated medical reminders\n\n\nTablet-based communications assistants\n\n\nHearing and conversation aids\n\n\n\n\nAssured Living\n\n\nRemote monitoring of the loved one’s home\n\n\nCommunicating with loved ones remotely\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a lively review of this rapidly growing concept. As always\, there is no charge for this seminar\, and light refreshments will be provided. \nThe courtesy of an advance registration is requested on or before Monday\, November 4…just call us at the Foundation office (888-750-2622) or email us at info@AmacFoundation.org. Thank you!

SUMMARY:Veterans Federal Benefits
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, we are once again embracing this subject of Veterans Benefits\, working in partnership with VITAS Healthcare to present an informative seminar based on “A Pledge of Allegiance to Veterans.”AMAC and the AMAC Foundation are staunch advocates on behalf of America’s Veterans\, believing strongly that veterans issues should remain a highly visible priority for any administration. SUMMARY:Sudden Death: Are You Prepared?
DESCRIPTION:Sudden Death: Are You Prepared?\nAttention: This event is comprised of three two-hour sessions.  \nHere are the dates of all three sessions: Wednesdays – August 14\, August 21\, & August 28\, 2019 – 10:00 am – Noon \nAttendance is limited; you must register to attend. \nNote Location: Lady Lake Library\,  \nIf you passed away tomorrow\, will your loved ones know what to do? Notebook materials will be provided \nA Note on the Importance of Pre-Registering\nFor certain seminars (including the “Sudden death – Are You Prepared?” series)\, there is a considerable amount of interaction between the speakers and the participants\, so we prefer to limit the number of participants to 30.

SUMMARY:Cutting the Cord...Life After Cable
DESCRIPTION:REPEAT SESSION!\nThe demand for our prior offerings of this workshop have been overwhelming! As shown in the photo at the bottom of this post\, we typically have a packed house for this highly-acclaimed workshop. As we experienced in our prior editions of this workshop\, our available seating filled almost immediately\, and this  has prompted us to schedule a seventh edition for Wednesday\, March 6\, 2019. We respectfully request that you register for this session in advance! \nIn case you missed it the first few times around\, here’s the description for this seminar: \nCord-cutting–the act of severing the traditional link to cable television–has grown substantially in recent years as two factors collide: the availability of a host of new options on the home entertainment market\, and growing dissatisfaction with cable companies’  price/reliability/service model. On this first factor\, the past few years have brought services like Netflix\, Amazon Prime Video\, Sling TV\, Huku\, Roku\, and others into the mainstream vocabulary\, while on the second factor\, many households have begun to take exception to what is perceived as a continual ramp up of pricing from the cable companies and somewhat of a deterioration in reliability and service levels. \nFor many households\, price has been the driver to consider dropping their cable service in favor of a newer\, cheaper option. Yes\, the cable companies gleefully advertise that their contract gives you hundreds and hundreds of channels\, and it breaks down to perhaps pennies for each of them. But realistically\, how many different channels do you really want? Most people typical have only a handful of favorites\, maybe a half dozen or so\, while the “hundreds and hundreds” available on cable are rarely–if ever–accessed. Here’s where the pay-as-you-go options of the rapidly emerging streaming market emerge as attractive alternatives. \nOK\, but how do I get there? What do I need to have to get there? And when I get there\, what have I given up? These and many other relevant questions will be answered in this informative two-hour session presented by the Foundation. Experts from Best Buy’s “Geek Squad” training staff will explain the marketplace\, covering the equipment and contract details you’ll need to consider in order to take the leap. \n  \nHere are the details for this session: \nDate:     Wednesday\, March 6\, 2019\nTime:     10:00 am to 11:30 am\nPlace:    Lady Lake Library\, 225 West Guava Street\, Lady Lake\, FL 32159\nThere is no cost for this workshop\, and light refreshments will be served. \nDeadline for registration is Friday\, March 1\, 2019. \nTo register: Contact the AMAC Foundation\, 888-750-2622 or email: info@amacfoundation.org. \n \n

SUMMARY:Understanding Advanced Directives
DESCRIPTION:Most folks have a general understanding that advanced directives are legal documents through which they can specify what health-related actions should be taken on their behalf if illness or incapacity renders them unable to make decisions for themselves. While the general concept is known\, there is widespread misunderstanding about their use in today’s patient/physician interactions. We welcome Chantal Morey\, RN and Assistant General Manager of Vitas Healthcare in Lake/Sumter Counties and Christopher Shepherd\, Volunteer Services Manager of Vitas at this workshop designed to review the meaning and types of Advance Directives and provide guidance and resources for their use.\n\nHere are the details:\n\nDate:     Tuesday\, January 15\, 2019\n\nTime:     10:00 am to 11:30 am\n\nPlace:    Lady Lake Library\n\nThere is no cost for this workshop\, and light refreshments will be served.\n\nTo register: Contact the AMAC Foundation\, 888-750-2622 or email: info@amacfoundation.org\n\nDeadline for reservation is Friday\, January 11\, 2019\n\nSpecial Note:  This seminar will be streamed live via the Foundation’s website. SUMMARY:Social Security Hot Buttons! An Update
DESCRIPTION:Whether it’s when to file\, how much of a benefit can I draw from my ex-spouse’s work record\, or how much can I earn if I keep working after filing early\, the questions just keep rolling in to the AMAC Foundation’s Social Security Advisory Service. And while we’re handling roughly 300 inquiries each month\, we’ve found that many of the questions cluster around a handful of basic areas. With this in mind\, we thought it might be helpful to provide an update on these most commonly queried subjects\, and that we present this update in a public setting where seminar attendees can get the facts straight from our staff of Certified Social Security Advisors. \nJoin us on Thursday\, November 15 for a lively session as our Advisors interpret the rules for you! We’ll update you on the details associated with these areas of Social Security: \n\nThe basics (10 minutes)\n\nEligibility requirements\nFull Retirement Age (FRA)\nHow benefits are calculated\n\n\nWhen to file (15 minutes)\n\nEarly filing\nFull Retirement Age\nDelayed Retirement Credits (DRCs)\nBreak-even Analyses\n\n\nWorking after filing (10 minutes)\n\nThe Earnings Test\n\n\nTaxation of Benefits (10 minutes)\nDisability Basics (15 minutes)\n\nEligibility\nWorking while on Disability\nTransition at FRA\n\n\nSpousal Benefits (15 minutes)\n\nMarried couples\nDivorced spouses\n\n\nSurviving Spouse Benefits (15 minutes)\n\nSurviving Spouses\nSurviving Ex-spouses\n\n\nWindfall Elimination Provision/Government Pension Offset (10 minutes)\n\nWho is affected\nImpact on benefits\n\n\n\nThis event will be streamed live via the AMAC Foundation’s website.
Here are the details that will be covered: \n\nWhole Home Wi-Fi Systems\nSmart Devices\n\nvoice assistants\nsmart locks\nsmart lights\nsmart outlets and smart switches\nsmart thermostats\nrobot vacuums\n\n\nAssistive Technology\n\nGPS-based communications assistance\nRemote medical and health monitoring devices\nAutomated medical reminders\nTablet-based communications assistants\nHearing and conversation aids\n\n\nAssured Living\n\nRemote monitoring of the loved one’s home\nCommunicating with loved ones remotely\n\n\n\nJoin us for a lively review of this rapidly growing concept. As always\, there is no charge for this seminar\, and light refreshments will be provided. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Caring for the Caregiver
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nUnfortunately\, we’ve had to cancel this seminar due to low interest. Over the coming weeks\, we will re-package the content to include topics that should appeal more to those embracing the “aging in place” trend\, including care giving for dementia sufferers. Stay tuned!\nMost of us understand the term “caregiver” and all that it implies\, and many of us are well aware of the role that those who care for loved ones assume in their everyday life. And it’s not an isolated situation\, since according to the Caregiver Action Network more than 65 million people (29% of the U.S. population) provide care for a chronically ill\, disabled\, or aged family member each year. The role of caregiver can be\, in equal parts\, both a rewarding situation and a source of personal stress\, with fatigue\, depression\, and an oftentimes overwhelming sense of futility creeping into the picture. \nSo\, for those who are caregivers\, or who believe they will find themselves in this capacity at some point down the road\, it becomes absolutely essential to understand that the role can only be effectively managed if the caregiver first takes care of themselves. Sounds obvious\, but dedicated caregivers can get caught up in the role they’ve taken on and lose sight of this basic need for attention to themselves. \nOur seminar\, organized in conjunction with VITAS Healthcare\, will provide a framework for understanding the importance of  caregiver self-management. From understanding the role of the caregiver to exploration of a number of related topics (like fall prevention\, home safety\, fraud/scam awareness)\, this two-hour seminar will address many often overlooked areas and will help caregivers understand the importance of addressing their own needs. \n

SUMMARY:Sudden Death: Are You Prepared?
DESCRIPTION: Sudden Death: Are You Prepared?\nAttention: This event is comprised of three two-hour sessions.  \nHere are the dates of all three sessions: Fridays – October 5\, October 12\, October 19 — 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm \nNote Location: Lady Lake Library\, 225 West Guava Street\, Lady Lake\, FL 32159 \nIf you passed away tomorrow\, will your loved ones know what to do? \nThere is no cost for this workshop series\, and light refreshments will be served at each session. SUMMARY:Life After Cable…Entertainment Alternatives! (REPEAT SESSION)
DESCRIPTION:REPEAT SESSION–Wednesday September 19\, 2018!\nThe level of interest in this topic has been incredible! As shown in the photo at the bottom of this post\, we’ve had packed houses for earlier offerings of this acclaimed workshop. As has been the case in our previous editions\, our available seating was filled almost immediately\, prompting us to schedule a multiple repeat editions. The next one is set for the morning of Wednesday\, September 19\, 2018. \nIn case you missed it the first time around\, here’s the description for this seminar: \nCord-cutting–the act of severing the traditional link to cable television–has grown substantially in recent years as two factors collide: the availability of a host of new options on the home entertainment market\, and growing dissatisfaction with cable companies’  price/reliability/service model. \nAlso\, based on some of the questions that came up during previous sessions\, we’ve added the topics of “TV antennas” and “shopping for a TV…what you need to focus on.”  \nHere are the details for this repeat session: \nDate:     Wednesday\, September 19\, 2018 \nTime:     10:00 am to Noon \nPlace:    Lady Lake Library\, 225 West Guava Street\, Lady Lake\, FL 32159 \nThere is no cost for this workshop\, and light refreshments will be served. \nTo register: \nContact the AMAC Foundation\, 888-750-2622 or email: info@amacfoundation.org

SUMMARY:Understanding the Connected Home
DESCRIPTION:REPEAT SESSION! ADDED CONTENT!\nIt’s been a long time coming\, but it has arrived. We’re talking about “The Connected Home” or the “Smart Home” and the fascinating concept of devices in the home communicating with each other and with outside sources. It’s not really a new concept\, since it’s been involving for quite a few years now\, but the seemingly constant announcements of new products designed to make life easier and simpler is leading to explosive growth in the number of “connected homes” in the U.S. In fact\, a recent USAToday article reports that by 2019\, over 15 million U.S. homes will be operating with “smart home systems.” \nSo\, what’s a connected home? Generally\, it’s a home with an internet connection to the outside world and a networking setup within its walls. This in-home network supports devices that communicate\, from energy management tools (like electronic thermostats that can be controlled from a smart phone\, intelligent lighting that can turn off and on depending on the amount of ambient light\, heating/air conditioning systems linked to the power company’s grid to take advantage of time-of-day rates\, etc.)\, to media and entertainment products that can tailor programs to your individual interests and select and record programs for you based on your preferences\, to healthcare tools (like devices that can communicate with your physician\, track and reorder medications\, record the results of fitness programs\, etc.). A large part of today’s marketplace also addresses home security\, with electronic locks\, recording of movement within the home\, and capabilities to remotely activate external property lighting. \nImagine a world that can accomplish routine–but critical–tasks for you\, automatically and without intervention from you. An electronic pill dispenser\, for example\, that can remind you of the need to take a certain medication at a certain time\, or a unit in your car that can allow you to confirm that you closed your garage door (or maybe even close it for you as you leave the driveway!) And how about the recently announced “Amazon Key” an electronic door lock that can be accessed by the delivery person so the valuable package can be put inside the house rather than leave it sitting on the porch. The variations are amazing\, and it’s increasingly becoming known as the “Internet of Things or the IoT\,” a global marketplace growing at a compound rate of well over 10% each year and fast approaching the three quarters of a trillion dollars level. \nLearn more about what this extraordinary subject at a seminar hosted by the AMAC Foundation and featuring a panel of experts from the retail industry. Our speakers will explore\, in an hour and a half overview seminar\, what the “smart home” or “connected home” actually is and how you can take advantage of the capabilities it offers. Come prepared with your questions\, and we’ll see that you get the answers you need. \nSpecial Note: Although this is a repeat session of a very popular topics\, we want to let you know that our speakers will be previewing a new in-home concept called “Assured Living\,” a sensor-based notification service that connects you with your loved one without intrusion. The service will enable exchange of real-time\, custom notifications about your loved one’s well-being from anywhere – on your iPhone\, iPad or your Apple Watch. This new and exciting concept is evolving rapidly in response to a growing trend of “aging in place”–remaining in one’s home as you age…a preference reportedly held by 90 percent of adults over the age of 65. \nHere are the details for this session: \nDate:     Tuesday\, August 14\, 2018 \nTime:     10:00 am to Noon \nPlace:    Lady Lake Library\, 225 West Guava Street\, Lady Lake\, FL 32159 \nThere is no cost for this workshop\, and light refreshments will be served. \nTo register: Contact the AMAC Foundation\, 888-750-2622 or email: info@amacfoundation.com. \nDeadline for reservation is Friday\, August 10\, 2018 \nSpecial Note:  This seminar will be streamed live via the Foundation’s website. SUMMARY:Caring for the Caregiver
DESCRIPTION:Most of us understand the term “caregiver” and all that it implies\, and many of us are well aware of the role that those who care for loved ones assume in their everyday life. And it’s not an isolated situation\, since according to the Caregiver Action Network more than 65 million people (29% of the U.S. population) provide care for a chronically ill\, disabled\, or aged family member each year. The role of caregiver can be\, in equal parts\, both a rewarding situation and a source of personal stress\, with fatigue\, depression\, and an oftentimes overwhelming sense of futility creeping into the picture.\n\nSo\, for those who are caregivers\, or who believe they will find themselves in this capacity at some point down the road\, it becomes absolutely essential to understand that the role can only be effectively managed if the caregiver first takes care of themselves. Sounds obvious\, but dedicated caregivers can get caught up in the role they’ve taken on and lose sight of this basic need for attention to themselves.\n\nOur seminar\, organized in conjunction with VITAS Healthcare\, will provide a framework for understanding the importance of  caregiver self-management. From understanding the role of the caregiver to exploration of a number of related topics (like fall prevention\, home safety\, fraud/scam awareness)\, this two-hour seminar will address many often overlooked areas and will help caregivers understand the importance of addressing their own needs.\n\n

It’s not really a new concept\, since it’s been involving for quite a few years now\, but the seemingly constant announcements of new products designed to make life easier and simpler is leading to explosive growth in the number of “connected homes” in the U.S. In fact\, a recent USAToday article reports that by 2019\, over 15 million U.S. homes will be operating with “smart home systems.”\n\nSo\, what’s a connected home? A large part of today’s marketplace also addresses home security\, with electronic locks\, recording of movement within the home\, and capabilities to remotely activate external property lighting.\n\nImagine a world that can accomplish routine–but critical–tasks for you\, automatically and without intervention from you. The variations are amazing\, and it’s increasingly becoming known as the “Internet of Things or the IoT\,” a global marketplace growing at a compound rate of well over 10% each year and fast approaching the three quarters of a trillion dollars level.\n\nLearn more about what this extraordinary subject at a seminar hosted by the AMAC Foundation and featuring a panel of experts from the retail industry.
