Expansion of Elder Fraud Information Continuing
As noted in last month's newsletter, our focus on Elder Fraud is continuing at a high level. On Wednesday, August 18, despite logistical complications attributed to the COVID-19 resurgence, we delivered a highly informative briefing on a host of details related to the issue. This briefing featured panelists from Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Florida Attorney General's office, and Citizens First Bank's Information Security Department. The Zoom webinar was recorded and is available on the Foundation website's "Videos" page. Click here to view it.

In addition, note that our website blog page (actually titled "News & Info) frequently presents a variety of posts associated with Elder Fraud, and so far in 2021 we've offered these informative topics: Note that in the coming months we'll be posting additional informative articles on the Elder Fraud topic as part of a partnership with AMAC Inc., AMAC Action, and a major third-party partner. The first article in this series ("Common Financial Scams Against Seniors and What to Do If It Happens to You") will arrive on our blog page Saturday, August 28 in conjunction with the partnership's editorial calendar.

This subject is a major concern for seniors and their families, and we intend to give it the attention it deserves. We feel that, without question, ensuring our constituents have a clear, consistent, and current understanding of the Elder Fraud threat is one of the best ways to combating this awful situation.

"If you exploit our seniors, we will find you and bring you to justice."

September Seminars...Another Busy Month!
  • The 24th edition of our highly acclaimed "Sudden Death: Are You Prepared" notebook series program is set to launch September 13 with the second and third parts following on September 20 and September 27. All sessions will be held at the Lady Lake Library, from 10:00 am to noon. The program's objective is to help ensure that survivors are prepared to deal with the aftermath of a loved one's death, guiding attendees through the creation of a "Survivor Notebook" to help loved ones cope after the death of a spouse or key family member. Reservations are now open for this series, but space is limited.
  • On Wednesday, September 15, we're offering a new subject designed to enlighten our constituents on a variety of life issues. The concept and reality of "aging" have changed over the years, and by focusing on some key elements, you can improve your chance to remain healthy and happy throughout your lifespan. In this webinar, you will learn about the myths of aging and key components of aging well, including physical health, cognitive health, meaning, socialization, and attitude. Our speaker, senior bulletin board "A Mighty Good Time" co-founder Amy Temperley, will also focus on tenets of active aging, like fitness, brain health, gratitude, and humor. Note: This session will be offered as a webinar in partnership with "A Mighty Good Time, and will be recorded and subsequently available for on-demand viewing via the Foundation website's "Videos" page.
  • A previous (and highly informative) webinar titled "Understanding Advance Directives" will be re-offered on Wednesday, September 22. Brittany Burgher, Regional Director of Admissions for Vitas Healthcare, will share insights into the meaning and types of Advance Directives, and will provide guidance and resources for their use. Brittany is a Registered Nurse/Paramedic, with a Clinical background in Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, and Hospice & Palliative care. As in the case of all our webinars, this session will be recorded and subsequently available for on-demand viewing via the Foundation website's "Videos" page.
Note also that our annual "New to Medicare" will be rescheduled for some time in September. The previously scheduled offering of this important webinar was cancelled due to COVID-19, and we are working to present it in advance of Medicare's Annual Enrollment period beginning in October.

Foundation Social Security Advisory Services Soldiers On During COVID-19 Resurgence
The AMAC offices in Florida took a substantial COVID-19 hit during the early part of August, causing the Foundation office to close and the staff to re-deploy on an emergency basis to offsite arrangements. It was hectic, to say the least, as our Advisory staff scrambled to arrange for individual testing and as arrangements were made for out-of-office quarantining. On top of the pandemic impact, our Advisory Service hit a major peak in activity levels, with the first half of the month bringing record numbers of incoming requests for counseling from the public. In fact, in the first three weeks of August, our staff handled well over 500 requests -- a record pace of activity!

We're proud to report that despite the logistical interruptions, our intrepid Advisors managed the service with their typical resolute approach, giving each caller the attention and quality our constituency has come to expect! We routinely conduct quality surveys, and it's important to note that 100% of the folks we surveyed reported complete satisfaction with the timeliness of our response to them, and that 99% would recommend the service to others. It's a service we offer free to the public, and it's in keeping with our Founder Dan Weber's recognition that Seniors need to be clearly informed regarding the options available to them under this critical benefit program.

Here's a quick look at how the Social Security Advisory Services has grown since its inception in 2016:
