SUMMARY:Social Security Overview – 2022 Version
DESCRIPTION:The AMAC Foundation’s Social Security Advisory Service is now in its seventh year of operation\, and has handled more than 20\,000 calls for help in understanding Social Security. We’ve found that many of the questions cluster around a handful of basic areas. With this in mind\, we thought it would be helpful to provide an update on these most commonly queried subjects\, and at the same time provide an update on some of the changes applicable to 2022. \n\n\n\nIn keeping with our Foundation’s mission of “Supporting and Educating America’s Seniors\,” we are again presenting an update in a public setting where seminar attendees can get the facts straight from our staff of National Social Security Advisors. Join us on Thursday\, March 3\, 2022 for a lively session as our Advisors refresh you on many of the basic Social Security rules you need to understand. Our topics will include: \n\n\n\nThe basics (Eligibility\, Full Retirement Age (FRA)\, etc\,) \n\n\n\nWhen/How to file \n\n\n\nTaxation of Benefits \n\n\n\nDisability Basics \n\n\n\nSpousal Benefits \n\n\n\nSurviving Spouse Benefits \n\n\n\n…and much more!   \n\n\n\nThe seminar will be held at the Lady Lake Library\, 225 W. Guava Street\, Room 207. \n\n\n\nThere is no fee for this seminar and light refreshments will be served. We do request the courtesy of an advance registration…simply contact the Foundation office at 888-750-2622 or via email (info@AmacFoundation.org). \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpecial Note:  This seminar will be streamed live via the Foundation’s website. SUMMARY:The Heart of the Veteran
DESCRIPTION:AMAC and its affiliate companies are staunch advocates on behalf of America’s Veterans\, believing strongly that veterans issues should remain a highly visible priority for any administration and any community. As opportunities present themselves\, AMAC’s resources champion these causes in order to underscore their importance. Locally\, the AMAC Foundation has sponsored educational sessions covering benefits available to our Veterans\, providing guidance on how to access these benefits. \n\n\n\nAs part of AMAC’s commitment to the Veteran community\, the company and its non-profit affiliates AMAC Action and AMAC Foundation have joined forces on a major initiative–AMAC’s Veterans 2021 Project–designed to synchronize a number of our efforts in support of our American heroes. As part of this project\, we’re proud to join forces with VITAS Healthcare to bring you a riveting discussion focused on understanding the impact of military culture and experiences\, the issues encountered by caregivers serving combat veterans\, and the myriad related services available for veterans and their families. The seminar’s goal is to honor the veterans’ preferences for end-of-life care and to provide them with the respect\, recognition\, comfort\, and compassion they deserve through dignified treatment and quality care. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, January 25\, we’ll conduct this highly informative session featuring VITAS Veteran Liaison Benedetto “Ban” Mongiovi\, III. Ben is an Iraq war vet with deployment experience in Kuwait and Turkey\, and a proud father of a battle-tested 82nd Airborne paratrooper and father-in-law to a Fort Carson\, Colorado-based Soldier. \n\n\n\nThis seminar is being presented in a virtual format (Zoom)\, and will be recorded for on-demand availability via the Foundation’s website. For further information\, please contact the Foundation office at 888-750-2622 or via email at info@amacfoundation.org.

SUMMARY:A Real-Life Perspective on PTSD and Its Relationship to Veteran Suicide
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event is presented by One More Day Inc.\, a Veteran-Operated nonprofit VSO/MSO dedicated to ending the loss of our nation’s cherished Veterans at the hands of suicide. The AMAC Foundation is partnering with One More Day as part of the AMAC Veterans 2100 Project. To register for this webinar\, contact the One More Day organization at 208-992-6178.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout the Webinar:\n\n\n\nAccording to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)\, Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking\, scary\, or dangerous event. \n\n\n\nExperiencing PTSD is not a rare situation\, and it’s not restricted to the Veteran community. PTSD is a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event\, like combat\, a natural disaster\, a car accident\, or sexual assault. It’s normal to have upsetting memories\, feel on edge\, or have trouble sleeping after this type of event. If symptoms last more than a few months\, it may be PTSD. The good news is that there are effective treatments. \n\n\n\nFrom the Veteran’s perspective\, official statistics report that 12% of Gulf War (Desert Storm) Veterans experience PTSD each year. For Vietnam Veterans\, that rate is even higher (about 15%)\, with an estimated 11% to 20% of Veterans from operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom similarly affected. These are high numbers\, and they give evidence to the need for focused attention on understanding and managing the problems associated with this often-debilitating condition. \n\n\n\nOne More Day\, Inc. is a registered non-profit VSO/MSO dedicated to eliminating suicide within the military\, veteran\, and law enforcement communities\, and one of their urgent priorities is the delivery of critical information on topics integral to this mission. Toward that goal\, One More Day\, Inc. is beyond honored to host a two-time American Hero. Delta Force Command Sergeant Major Tom Satterly will be our featured speaker on our PTSD webinar on 1/14/22 @ 1400 MST. Tom is one of the most decorated special operations warriors of all time and was involved in thousands of classified missions to protect the United States and his brothers/sisters. Tom did not know it at the time\, but his worst foe was yet to come. After leaving the military\, Tom\, like many of our warriors\, was haunted by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Listen to Tom and his wife Jen as they explain to us how he came back. Tom is now back in the saddle and helping other special operations warriors overcome that same foe. \n\n\n\nIn addition to sharing the Satterlys’ story\, our webinar will discuss the neuro-psychology of why we suffer from PTSD\, some current awesome treatments\, and even what is on the horizon. Dr. Paul E. Holtzheimer\, MD\, Deputy Director for Research at the VA’s National Center for PTSD\, will be our featured expert\, along with several speakers on-hand to answer a variety of questions regarding PTSD. We also will have a number of experts on-hand to answer a multitude of questions regarding PTSD.If you are suffering from PTSD\, or know someone dealing with PTSD\, and want to learn about the ways we are working with experts to ensure that suicide is not the answer\, please join us.January 14th @1400 EST \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIf you are suffering from PTSD and want to learn about the ways we are working with experts to ensure you do not end up planning suicide\, please join us.

SUMMARY:Sudden Death: Are You Prepared?
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE: THIS SERIES IS NOW FULLY SUBSCRIBED…NO ADDITIONAL REGISTRATIONS ARE BEING ACCEPTED. OUR NEXT SERIES BEGINS APRIL 21\, 2022.\n\n\n\nAttention: This event consists of three two-hour sessions. \n\n\n\nHere are the dates for all three sessions: Wednesdays – January 12\, January 19\, and January 26 — 10:00 am to Noon \n\n\n\nNote Location: Lady Lake Library\, 225 West Guava Street\, Lady Lake \n\n\n\nAttendance is limited; you must register to attend.\n\n\n\nProgam Description:\n\n\n\nIf you passed away tomorrow\, will your loved ones know what to do? Will they know where your financial information and tax records\, insurance records\, and investment documents are stored? Will they be able to locate your most current will\, health care directives\, and documented funeral wishes? Can they locate important household documents\, like deeds\, car titles\, and pension statements? \n\n\n\nThe list goes on and on\, but the important point is that having this type of pertinent information organized and available in a structured place is something you can do in advance for those you leave behind. It’s a big task and it’s not an easy one…we know that. But with a structured approach\, you can create a living document that will prove invaluable to your loved ones. \n\n\n\nThis seminar has been structured to guide you through the process of creating your “Survivor Notebook\,” the repository that will help your loved ones cope after your passing. Conducted in three separate two-hour sessions\, we’ll walk you through identifying what needs to be considered\, assembling the material as we go in an accessible format\, and we’ll be developing an approach to maintaining the material so that it’s always current. You’ll leave with a physical roadmap that will be of immeasurable value to your family. \n\n\n\nThere is no cost for this workshop series\, but attendance is limited so you must register to attend. Light refreshments will be served at each session. Notebook materials will be provided.  \n\n\n\nAlso\, please be advised that COVID-19 restrictions may be in effect for this seminar series. Stay tuned to this webpage for alerts. \n\n\n\nA Note on the Importance of Pre-Registering\n\n\n\nFor certain seminars (including the “Sudden death – Are You Prepared?” series)\, there is a considerable amount of interaction between the speakers and the participants\, so we prefer to limit the number of participants to 30. Also\, participants are provided resources in the form of a formal notebook and various reference materials\, all of which must be assembled in advance. Hence\, we need to carefully track the number of expected (and registered) attendees. While we can occasionally accommodate walk-ins\, that’s not always the case\, and unregistered folks then tend to be disappointed at having wasted time and effort. Finally\, since we also provide snacks for attendees\, it’s important that we know the audience size we need to plan for when we purchase our supplies the day before.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAlso\, if after registering you find that you are unable to attend\, please let us know so we can offer that space to someone on our waiting list.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTo register: Contact the AMAC Foundation\, 888-750-2622 or email: info@amacfoundation.org

SUMMARY:Coping With Loss During the Holidays (WEBINAR)
DESCRIPTION:Here’s a startling quote from a Florida-based home care service: “According to Mental Health America\, more than two million of the 34 million Americans age 65 and older suffer from some form of depression – and during the holidays this number climbs.” Unfortunately\, there are many similar reports of melancholy settling in as the holiday season arrives\, and it kind of makes you wonder why\, since this season is generally welcomed by so many as a time of celebration\, family get-togethers\, relaxation\, and peaceful personal reflection. For many\, though\, and especially for the senior segment of our population\, dealing with the loss of loved ones and the memories of time gone by can color an otherwise festive time with a bit of sadness. \n\n\n\nSo\, with the holiday season rapidly approaching\, AMAC foundation in collaboration with VITAS Healthcare explores this matter with an insightful webinar titled “Coping with loss during the Holidays” webinar. We understand the holidays can be a hard time of year with the memories of our loved ones\, and with this webinar we’ll provide valuable information on the dynamics\, reactions\, and strategies of loss and grief and understanding how these dynamics are made especially difficult and depressing during the holidays. Our featured speaker will be Jessica McClure\, LCSW Bereavement Manager for VITAS Healthcare Lake and Sumter Counties. \n\n\n\nVITAS Healthcare\, with more than 40 years of experience in hospice care\, is the nation’s largest single-source provider of end-of-life care. Their nearly 12\,000 professionals provide care to over 19\,000 patients daily throughout 14 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. \n\n\n\nNote: This session will be offered as a webinar. It will be recorded and subsequently available for on-demand viewing via the Foundation website’s “Videos” page. \n\n\n\nTo register for the event\, please contact the Foundation office at 888-750-2622 or via email at info@AmacFoundation.org. \n\n\n\nWe’ll “see” you there!

SUMMARY:Understanding Advance Directives (WEBINAR)
DESCRIPTION:Most folks have a general understanding that advanced directives are legal documents through which they can specify what health-related actions should be taken on their behalf if illness or incapacity renders them unable to make decisions for themselves. While the general concept is known\, there is widespread misunderstanding about their use in today’s patient/physician interactions. SUMMARY:Sudden Death: Are You Prepared?
DESCRIPTION:Attention: This event consists of three two-hour sessions. \n\n\n\nHere are the dates for all three sessions: Mondays – September 13\, September 20\, and September 27\, 2021 — 10:00 am to 12:00 pm \n\n\n\nNote Location: Lady Lake Library\, 225 W Guava Street\, Lady Lake\, FL 32159 (Room 207) \n\n\n\nAttendance is limited; you must register to attend.\n\n\n\nProgam Description:\n\n\n\nIf you passed away tomorrow\, will your loved ones know what to do? Will they know where your financial information and tax records\, insurance records\, and investment documents are stored? Will they be able to locate your most current will\, health care directives\, and documented funeral wishes? Can they locate important household documents\, like deeds\, car titles\, and pension statements? \n\n\n\nThe list goes on and on\, but the important point is that having this type of pertinent information organized and available in a structured place is something you can do in advance for those you leave behind. It’s a big task and it’s not an easy one…we know that. But with a structured approach you can create a living document that will prove invaluable to your loved ones. Finally\, since we also provide snacks for attendees\, it’s important that we know the audience size we need to plan for when we purchase our supplies the day before.\n\n\n\nAlso\, if after registering you find that you are unable to atted\, please let us know so we can offer that space to someone on our waiting list.\n\n\n\nTo register: Contact the AMAC Foundation\, 888-750-2622 or email: info@amacfoundation.org

SUMMARY:Combating the Growing Problem of Elder Fraud
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE: Due to the resurgence of COVID-19 infections\, and based partly on scheduled speaker feedback\, we will be hosting this seminar as a virtual presentation\, using a Zoom platform. A Zoom link will be sent to all registered attendees the day before the scheduled start time.\n\n\n\nThe FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) carefully tracks reported financial crimes targeting seniors\, using this information to educate the public on the vulnerabilities older Americans face in their daily lives. IC3’s recent 2020 Elder Fraud Report\, for example\, provides an extensive analysis of the types of fraud and scam situations seniors face\, including definitions of tactics used by swindlers and the defenses seniors can use to protect themselves. All-in-all\, a very informative and important document! \n\n\n\nThe IC3 Elder Fraud Report also points out a frightening trend…crime complaints reported by victims over age 60 are rising at an alarming rate. For example\, the number of complaints reported by this demographic has roughly doubled since 2015. More alarmingly\, the financial consequences of these fraud situations have more than tripled in the same period\, now representing a loss to seniors of nearly $1 billion annually! But what’s really distressing is that of all the fraud crimes reported by the public\, more than 20% target Americans over age 60. \n\n\n\nIn keeping with our mission of supporting and educating America’s seniors\, our Foundation keeps a watchful eye on the Elder Fraud situation with seminars and blog posts designed to promote public awareness of this very real and growing problem. On Wednesday\, August 18 we will present a two-hour seminar focused on the Elder Fraud topic\, with speakers from law enforcement\, the financial community\, and state government on hand to discuss ways to prevent falling victim to fraud\, how to secure yourself financially from fraudulent activity\, and what to do if you are a victim of fraud. \n\n\n\nThe seminar will be held at the Lady Lake Library\, 225 West Guava Street in Lady Lake\, beginning at 10:00 am. The presentations will be live-streamed via the AMAC network for remote access and recorded for later on-demand viewing. Light refreshments will be served. \n\n\n\nYou won’t want to miss this one! To reserve your seat at this event\, contact the Foundation office at 888-750-2622 or email us at info@AmacFoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Managing Allergies: Some Helpful Hints
DESCRIPTION:It’s a commonly-held belief that allergies are the curse of children and young adults\, but that’s not necessarily truth. For example\, Beth Corn\, MD\, an allergist in New York City. quoted on WebMD\, suggests that “As the population is aging\, we’re seeing that people can have late-onset allergies. Now\, it could be that some people were not diagnosed; they might have really had allergies earlier on. It just might be that people are also a little bit more aware now of allergies.” \n\n\n\nIn fact\, this time of the year brings with it quite a bit of respiratory discomfort for many of us. As we know\, with Spring comes beautiful weather\, beautiful flowers and\, unfortunately\, a heap of not-so-beautiful allergic reactions. So\, with this in mind\, we’ve arranged for a discussion that will help Seniors spring into Action and learn more about allergies\, COPD\, and lung health. In this seminar\, you will discover some healthy ways to manage your allergies\, overall respiratory system health\, and diseases such as COPD.    \n\n\n\nOur speakers for this discussion will be Chris Shepherd and Gloria Puerto-Ebey from Vitas Healthcare\, and we’ll be presenting this topic as a virtual (Zoom) webinar. In keeping with our practice for online events\, we’ll record the session and make it available for on-demand viewing via the AMAC Foundation website. To register for the event\, please contact the Foundation office at 888-750-2622 or via email at info@AmacFoundation.org. \n\n\n\nWe’ll “see” you there!

SUMMARY:Social Security Overview – 2021 Version
DESCRIPTION:The AMAC Foundation’s Social\nSecurity Advisory Service is now in its sixth year of operation\, and has handled\nmore than 15\,000 calls for help in understanding Social Security. We’ve found\nthat many of the questions cluster around a handful of basic areas. Our topics will include: \n\n\n\nThe basics (Eligibility\, Full Retirement Age (FRA)\, etc\,) \n\n\n\nWhen/How to file \n\n\n\nTaxation of Benefits \n\n\n\nDisability Basics \n\n\n\nSpousal Benefits \n\n\n\nSurviving Spouse Benefits \n\n\n\n…and much more!   \n\n\n\nCOVID-19 restrictions will be in effect\, with face coverings\, limited attendance\, and social distancing required. \n\n\n\nThe seminar will be held at the Lady Lake Library\, 225 W. SUMMARY:Women and Social Security (Webinar) - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Social Security is complex…no question about that! And for women\, this complexity is heightened by several basic factors\, including the simple statistic that women tend to have a longer life expectancy than men\, often have had quite different working histories than men\, and are more often single in their retirement years. Couple that with the fact that\, for unmarried women\, Social Security represents roughly half of their total income in retirement. \n\n\n\nSo\, in addition to its complexity\, Social Security represents for women an area where considerable attention must be placed on making the best decisions for both the short and long-term. Knowing the implications of when to file\, for example\, and the consequences of this decision on spousal benefits and survivor benefits\, is something that is often overlooked in the decision-making process. Disability issues\, whether it’s you or your spouse\, are another area where careful planning is critical. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will provide an overview of the Social Security System and how it serves all Americans\, and will provide details on the issues that require close attention on the part of women as beneficiaries. For this presentation\, we will be using an online Webinar format\, with the overall workshop delivered in four 1-hour sessions conducted one week apart. The scheduled dates are: \n\n\n\n\n Part 1 – Wednesday\, January 20\, 2021 \n\n\n\n Part 2 – Wednesday\, January 27\, 2021 \n\n\n\n Part 3 – Wednesday\, February 3\, 2021 \n\n\n\n Part 4 – Wednesday\, February 10\, 2021 \n\n\n\n\nThis is the second part of this four-part program. The recorded version of part one will be available shortly on our “Videos” page\, in the “Social Security” category. \n\n\n\nContact the Foundation office for registration details: 1-888-750-2622\, or email us at info@amacfoundation.org

SUMMARY:Understanding Reverse Mortgages
DESCRIPTION:According to reports from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development\, the reverse mortgage concept is continuing to grow in popularity among older Americans. For homeowners age 62 or older\, they represent an opportunity to convert part of the equity in their home into cash without having to sell your home or pay additional monthly bills. But most reputable information sources make it clear that the concept is fairly complicated and the opportunity may not be right for everyone. Caution and careful investigation are the watchwords trustworthy financial companies tend to use when approached by someone considering taking this step. \n\n\n\nSo\, if you’re thinking about pursuing the reverse mortgage route\, what do you do? In keeping with our mission of supporting and educating America’s Seniors\, we’ve arranged for an unbiased discussion on the details associated with the reverse mortgage idea. \n\n\n\nBruce Hancock\, Reverse Mortgage Specialist with American Advisors Group\, will present the basics of reverse mortgages\, addressing these points: \n\n\n\nthe myths and misunderstandings that have plagued the Reverse mortgage industry for years\n\n\n\nhow an existing mortgage factors into the process\n\n\n\nhow the concept fits with “aging at home” initiatives\n\n\n\nvarious types of reverse mortgages (HECMs\, proprietary reverse mortgages\, etc.)\n\n\n\n… and much more! \n\n\n\nThis is not a sales-oriented discussion…only the facts and details associated with the concept will be discussed. You will come away with a better understanding of reverse mortgages and enough to decide if its a concept you want to pursue. \n\n\n\nPlease note that we are offering this seminar as a virtual (ZOOM) presentation. To register for this webinar\, please contact the Foundation office (888-750-2622) or via email at info@AmacFoundation.org). \n\n\n\nDeadline for registration is Tuesday\, September 8\, 2020
